Luxury Travel on Upward Growth Trajectory

India is known to be an involving leader in the field of Asia Pacific travel market, and it is now all set to enter the budding industry of luxury travel. It is being estimated that the luxury market of India is going to experience quick growth with a CAGR of around 12.8 percent in the coming ten years.

Source
The trendsetters in the market of luxury, such as prominent film productions houses like Yash Raj Films and Fox Star Studios, and leading destination wedding planning firms such as Beautiful Wedding Management, Wedniksha, Percept Weddings, and Fab Events, feel that as far as the industry of luxury travel is concerned India is growing at a rapid rate.

Shedding light on what was the prime cause of growth in the outbound luxury travel from India, Founder & CMD at Platinum World Group, Sushil Shamlal Wadhwa said, “As people earn more wealth and get exposed to unique experiences and new destinations, luxury travel has become the new status symbol and the 'in thing' to do. The awareness that experiences and not things can give more happiness is also contributing to the growing popularity of luxury travel”.

After realizing the importance of Indian visitors, global venues and international destinations have now started to show interest and thus are putting-in all their resources in order to target quality travelers from India. Nevertheless, each wants to have their unique manner for doing so. Adding, Wadhwa said “A popular destination will have to reinvent itself and offer newer experiences to attract the luxury traveler. It's relatively easier for unexplored destinations to attract the luxury traveler just because it's not explored by many people yet. Being a part of good movies, editorials in leading travel publications and good visibility on Social media could certainly help a lot to target premium Indian travelers”.

In order to highlight the amazing potential in the bustling luxury market, the MILT Congress is again all set to host the top luxury travel agencies, leading destination wedding planners and prime film production houses, and bring them together with the topmost corporates so that they can meet the international suppliers who are meeting the requirement of this niche industry from all across the globe. The aim is to form beneficial partnerships at competitive rates. For the same, the 4th Annual MICE India & Luxury Travel Congress will be organized at The St. Regis Mumbai, India on 28th and 29th July.

Parthip Thyagarajan, Co-founder & Director at WeddingSutra informs that the market of destinations wedding in India is on a high as there now a huge number of Indian who want to celebrate their D-day at a special destination abroad. Thyagarajan quipped, “Every year over 280 to 300 Indian weddings take place at international destinations - Thailand, Bali, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Mauritius, Macau, Malaysia, Abu Dhabi, Oman, Dubai, and a few in Europe. In the last two years the Middle East has become the hottest destination for wealthy Indians, and hence properties in Oman, Abu Dhabi and Dubai are getting a steady flow of enquiries from families and wedding planners”.

Percept Wedding is one of the leading destination wedding organizers who have organized weddings at several destinations such as Monte Carlo, Budapest, Madrid, Cannes, Mykonos, Florence, Mauritius, Dubai and Salzburg. Vice President Business Development, Percept Weddings, Khushi Singh talks about the developments that are going to heighten the number of destinations keeping their target of Indian high net worth individuals. “A current trend is finding the most unconventional venues, and subtly integrating the destination within the overall wedding experience,” said Singh. She further added that there is a great potential in the concept of destination wedding and it can be taken to a new level by organizing a destination wedding on a cruise, at 2-3 destinations and holding functions where the cruise liner docks on a daily basis.

The Tourism boards of destinations around the world are promoting their destinations and attractions in a comprehensive manner by offering customized tour packages to couples so that they plan their wedding in their countries. As a result, the local culture of that is also promoted, brining business for the local vendors. Saurabh Walwani, Managing Director, Fab Events India Pvt. Ltd points out towards the contrast and says that planning a wedding at an international destination is not that beneficial for that destination. He pointed out, “The destination’s hotels and local vendors get business and an exposure to Indian weddings. From the wedding planner’s point of view, it just doesn't gives us an experience, but also builds up our portfolio much stronger and gives us confidence to explore more of the destination for weddings in the rest of the world.”

Adding, Bhavnesh Sawhney, Director, Wedniksha said that if there is an Indian wedding in any country, it is largely beneficial for that destination as an Indian wedding means a huge group of people is going to be there, resulting in an increase in the tourism revenue and creating wonderful business for the local vendors such as logistics or decoration people. The local culture of that country also gets promoted by all this.

It is not only the destination wedding organizers who have a huge contribution in this market. The prosperous film industry of India or Bollywood has also experienced an extraordinary growth in the past years. This has allured several foreign tourism boards to make such efforts that their destinations gets featured into Indian movies so that Indian tourists are attracted to them. Aashish Singh, – Vice President Production at Yash Raj Films remarked, “Films usually depict the beautiful side of the locations, if the audience sees their favorite stars in those locations then it becomes even more aspirational for the tourists to travel to those locations. There have been many case studies both in Hollywood and Bollywood to prove how there is a direct impact on tourism after a film is shot on a location.”

Parth Arora, Head of Production at Fox Star Studios, shares similar views and said, “Indian films have always played a great role in defining the travel markets for Indian audiences. The way Bollywood films and their stars are revered in this country, any place that films are shot at become aspirational for the Indian audiences. We have often seen a huge surge in tourism in countries where Indian films have shot in the past”.

Director at Qn A International, the organizers of the event (MICE India & Luxury Travel Congress) stated, “Luxury is now the fastest growing segment of the travel industry. Indians are now craving for a new and evolved kind of luxury, offering these premium buyers an exclusive and personalized experience is now more crucial than ever to retain existing clients and gain new ones. At the MILT Congress, we bring together partners who provide customized packages that meet the wants of this niche market in India.”

Palace on Wheels Vintage Dining: Experience Maharajas Life

Putting forward a wonderful opportunity for travel buffs to enjoy the magic and allure of the dining and living it out in the vintage settings, the heritage wing of the railways has proposed an amazing scheme. According to the proposal, exquisite vintage hotels cum restaurants would be built in the coaches of the train which would be set amidst the ambience of old station. According the officials at the heritage wing, this will not only serve the aim of preserving the transporter’s heritage but also will harness its potential to earn revenue.

The suggestion seems to bring a great news for the luxury lovers and history buffs who always look forward to get a slice of Indian royal heritage while on their expedition to the country. The proposal has a broad scope. According to a senior Railway Ministry Official, “We have sent the vintage hotel proposal to the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) for consideration. Each vintage hotel will have two to three coaches and would cost an estimated Rs. 16 crore”. There is little doubt that guests will have a great opportunity to fully relax and enjoy the delicious meals in the inspiring classical settings.

It is being recommended that the seven of the nine coaches, which are currently housed in the National Museum can be refurbished and transformed into these envisaged hotel-cum-restaurants and then they can be placed at suitable locations which can be any prominent tourist destination or a place which is easily accessible by road from a prominent destination.

One of the planned destinations to build such hotels is near the Rewari Steam Center which draw steam locomotives and is situated away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Places like Jaipur, which itself is a great cultural and vibrant city, can be a good place to build such hotels.

The Palace of Wheels is one of the most exotic and fascinating luxury trains of India. There are 14 saloons (compartments) in all- named after different Rajasthani cities such as Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Bharatpur etc. Each compartment comes equipped with a TV, WIFI as well as two dedicated hosts, dressed in traditional attires. Furnishing a wonderful taste of history, the train takes you through some of the most incredible destinations of India as well stunning countryside, reminiscent of some Bollywood movie setting.

This amazing proposal is sure to bring a lot of appreciation and business for the Indian Railways as well as bring back the lofty memories of the opulent and luxurious ways in which Maharajas of the yore used to live. Wishing all the success to the Palace on Wheels.

Luxury train travel in India has come a long way since the introduction of the Palace on Wheels in 1982. With Deccan Odyssey voted the Asia's Best Luxury Train and Maharajas' Express now voted World's Leading Luxury Train for three consecutive years, luxury train travel is growing rapidly with clientele from across the world. Whereas Western Europe and USA contribute more than 70% of the clientele, the Gulf countries and CIS is catching up really fast.

"Luxury trains in India are registering higher occupancy rate each year. But there are many guests who are very much interested in luxury trains but are unable to do so due to high tariff," said Mr. Rahul Sharma, Managing Director, Indian Holiday Pvt. Ltd.

"Quite interestingly, we also receive quite a few client request asking whether they could take one of these train journeys for a shorter duration." He added. The itineraries offered by these trains last for seven days, but looking into these requests, the train operators have indeed come up with shorter journeys. These short journeys normally include the golden triangle comprising of Delhi, Jaipur and Agra with addition – in some cases – of a national park like Ranthambore and Keoladeo Ghana National Park in Bharatpur, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In the last few years, luxury in India has been growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 25%. The luxury market in India with a CAGR of 12.8% is growing faster and higher than the other BRIC nations, and which is also the highest of the 25 countries explored said a report by Amadeus.

As per a recent study by Lonely Planet, luxury travelers are now looking for 'Curated Experiences' and 'Experiential Encounters.' This is where luxury trains in India come in with their tastefully crafted itinerary which not only includes visit to some of the most prominent tourist destinations in India but also an array of local and offbeat experiences. These experiences may include dining in a palace with family of maharajas recounting their days of yore to visit to villages where tribes have turned environmentalists 100s of years ago.

While Maharajas' Express and Deccan Odyssey offer 5 and 6 itineraries across India, Royal Rajasthan on Wheels offer tour across destinations in Rajasthan along with Agra, Khajuraho and Varanasi, three of the major extensions to the popular golden triangle tour of India. There is a good news for tourists, be it pilgrims or adventure enthusiasts and traders. Officials inform that a new border gate between India and Myanmar is going to be opened, soon. U Thein Swe, the Immigration Minister of Mayanmar informed that soon a new international border gate will be opened at Tamu, Sagaing. He added that there is enthusiasm among the authorities of both the countries.

New International Border Gate in Tamu to Be Opened By Myanmar and India

Swe said that the decision of signing an agreement was under discussion between the foreign ministers of the two nations. He said, “We’ve already met with the Indian ambassador, who said his government wanted to open the gate. We expect it will be open within the next four months.” He cleared all the air about this matter at Amyotha Hluttaw while dealing with questions from his MPs. He added, “The Tamu border gate will promote improvements in religious, social and commercial contacts.”

Previously, there are four gates Tachileik, Myawady, Htee Khee and Kawthoung, which provide a passageway to the tourists. The Tamu gate is going to be the fifth one. The tourism ministry stated that the numbers of caravan tours coming to Mayanmar till October 31 this year were up by 20 percent in comparison to last year. Till September, 2.2 million foreign visitors had entered Mayanmar, via land borders.

It is being expected that there is going to be an increase in the number of caravan tours once the gate at Tamu opens. These tours would be able to pass through Myanmar, via Thailand or Vietnam. On a positive note, Daw Aye Sander, director of Mother Irrawaddy travel and caravan tours, says, “Tamu will become an important border gate. And caravan tours from the Myanmar-Thailand borders can cross Myanmar to visit Imphal and Bhutan.”

She further informed that the ministry of tourism takes around seven days to grant permission to the caravan tours to enter. This permission, however, can be withheld in case of any security risks, as is the case at Muse border gate.

In the current times, traders and tourists can enter from Tamu-Moreh and Khawmawi and Rikhawdar - the Myanmar village pair, which connect with village Zokhawthar in Mizoram state of India. One is required to pay an entry fee of INR 10 per person and INR 100 rupees per vehicle, per day.

Minister Swe said, “The Indian government is very enthusiastic about signing the agreement on Tamu-Moreh, which would boost businesses and tourism and allow pilgrimages. We want to implement this as soon as possible.”

A tourism development conference was held last week in Manipur where the travel agencies in India expressed their interest in selling tours packages and trips to Tamu and Kalay in Sagaing Region, by crossing India-Myanmar land border. This conference was also attended by, tourism representatives from Myanmar. This proposal was discussed with the Myanmar officials a number of time but the plan was delayed due to late reply from Myanmar.

In a press conference on 24th November, secretary of India’s Ministry of Tourism, Vinod Zutshi had informed that India is making efforts to make a connection with a number of countries for offering tour packages, in order to promote tourism-based community development. Myanmar is one of those countries. He said, “We are trying to have some kind of connectivity between Northeast India and areas further east including Myanmar and other Southeast Asian countries in the ASEAN.”
