Departures

The departures of the luxury carriage, Palace on Wheels, have been scheduled from September 2013 to April 2014. On every Wednesday, the train departs from the Safdarjung Railway Station, Delhi. The guests are required to report at the railway station by 16:30 hours, as the train departs at 18:00 hours.
No departures scheduled between May to August.

Note: Departure on December 19th & 26th, 2013 incur a 10% holiday surcharge.

Conditions

As fluctuations in the exchange rate, costs are subjected to change every week.
For fully independent travelers, 20% of the tariff is required to be paid at the time of booking confirmation and remaining 80% needs to be paid 60 days before the departure.
For group tours, 20% of the tariff is required to be paid at the time of booking confirmation and remaining 80% needs to be paid 75 days before the departure.

Refunds

The guests need to inform the palace on Wheels via e-mail or fax. The amount of the refund depends upon the number of days remaining in the departure. There are different refund policies for fully independent travelers and group tours.

For the Fully Independent Travelers (FITs):

Cancellation before 60 days of departure, the refund amount would be 95% of the ticket value.
Cancellation before 30-59 days to departure, the refund amount would be 80% of the ticket value.
Cancellation before 0-30 days before departure, No refund would be provided.

In case of Group Tours:

Cancellation before 60 days of departure, the refund amount would be 90% of the ticket value.
Cancellation before 0-59 days before departure, No refund would be provided.

Ruins of Bhangarh Fort (Rajasthan)

“Staying After Sunset Is Strictly Prohibited In This Area.” This is the signboard that you will find if you visit the ruins of Bhangarh. This signboard is put by ASI at Bhangarh ruins. A strange feeling, causing anxiety and restlessness, is experienced by the people who visit this place.

If you travel through the pages of history, the Bhangarh Fort was built the younger brother of King Akbar’s General Man Singh, Madho Singh, in the year 1631. But soon after, the city was abandoned. Madho Singh, after seeking permission of an ascetic Baba Balanath, who meditated there, built the town. Baba Balanath had predicted “Look my dear! The moment the shadow of your palace touches me you are undone. The city shall be no more!”

In ignorance the grandson of Madho Singh, Ajab Singh, raised the height of the palace to such an extent that the shadow reached the forbidden area. Thus, the devastation of Bhangarh was witnessed.

Local folks say the city was vacated overnight because of the curse. The curse also said, “If the town ever rediscovered, the township would not be possible, but only temples would show up.”

Adding fact to the story, there are only temples located in the vicinity of the place and only shrines could be seen from high altitude mountains. People who stayed at Bhangarh after dark are reported to be missing till date.

Apart from this, the rules of Government of India state that there has to be an ASI (Archaeology Survey of India) office beside every Indian historical structure. But, in contrary to the rule, the government authorities have set their office at a distance of one kilometer the ruins of Bhangarh.

A clever manipulation resulted into a brutal assassination. The prince uncle's message ‘Narayan Rao La Dharaa’ (Catch Narayan Rao) to the guards, was modified by his wife to ‘Narayan Rao La Maara’ (Kill Narayan Rao).

As the boy was chased by his assassins, all across the fort, the boy cried, again and again "Kaka, Mala Vachva!" The cries for help are even heard on every new moon day at midnight.

Belonging to a country with the biggest rail network, train travel has always fascinated me. There is something very different and alluring about train travel that you cannot compare to any other mode of transportation say flight or ship.

Amongst the best rail journeys in the world that I have taken till take, my favorite was from New Delhi to Nasik. It was a lifetime experience, though it took almost 23 hours to reach. On the way to Nasik, I was amazed to see some very beautiful railway stations with amazing interiors and architecture.

My love for train travel has forced me to make a list of world’s most beautiful railway stations that I wish to see. Here is a rundown of some of my favorites:

Grand Central Terminal, New York

Grand Central Terminal is one of the world’s famous railway stations. This station is not just grand, but the world’s 6th most visited tourist destination according to the Travel + Leisure magazine. Design-oriented company Apple has also proposed to establish one of its flagship retail stores inside the Terminal.

Belgium Antwerp Central Station

Antwerpen-Centraal (Flemish) is the Antwerp Central Station in Belgium. The fine architecture featuring large glass and iron vaulted dome that soars above the main waiting area. Louis Delacenserie was the architect of the building, who designed the station by taking inspiration from different architectural styles. Till date, the building is not categorized under one specific architectural style. During the time of its construction, the building was highly criticized for its lavishness, due to marble decoration.

Gare De Liège-Guillemins, Liège, Belgium

Gare De Liège-Guillemins is the major station in the 3rd largest city in Belgium - Liege. The railway station is also one of the 3 Belgian stations on the high-speed rail network. The architectural brilliance makes this railway stations rank highest amidst the beautiful stations in Europe.

CFM Railway Station, Maputo, Mozambique

CFM Railway Station is simply amazing and defines beauty in the perfect way. The mint-green exteriors, wrought-iron latticework and a large dome add as major attributes of the unspoilt beauty of the railway station. This railway station was designed in the early 20th century by Gustave Eiffel. Various historic steam locomotives are also showcased here.

Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building, Japan

Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building is one of the busiest terminal stations in Japan. This station also serves as the travel gateway of Shinkansen bullet trains, which are bound for different regions of Japan. This structure is also a cultural property having a long history and stories associated with it. After renovation, the station showcases the classic outlook of 100 years ago. The station reopened in October, 2012.

Helsinki Central Station, Finland

Helsinki Central Station is a major spot of public transportation in Finland. About 200,000 passengers per day are recorded to be at Helsinki's Central station. The entrance of the railway station is beautified with statues holding the lamps and a distinct clock tower. The construction material and architectural brilliance makes the station one of a kind.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is designed according to the High Victorian Gothic style of architecture and was built during the Victorian era by the British. This railway station is also listed as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This railway station, right from the entrance, provides a feeling of royalty. Apart from being the popular railway station in India, CST Mumbai has also earned huge recognition in the world.

King's Cross Station, London, England

King's Cross Station is on my list as it is a major railway & underground station in London. The station is also located in proximity with Kings Cross, Somers Town, Bloomsbury and Regent's Park. The British Library is also one of the major attractions located near to the station. Kings Cross Station is also located adjacent to King's Cross St Pancras Underground Station, which is on the Metropolitan Line, the Victoria Line, the Circle line, and the Hammersmith & City Line.

São Bento Station, Porto, Portugal

São Bento Station is one of my favorites due to its extraordinary beauty. The railway station is designed according to the 19th-century Parisian architecture with its stone façade and mansard roof. The awestruck front hall of the station is a major section that showcases unspoilt beauty. The walls of the station are also covered with about 20,000 splendid azulejo tin-glazed ceramic tiles. The artist, Jorge Colaço, took 11 years to complete it.

Gare Du Nord, Paris, France

Gare Du Nord is acclaimed to be the busiest railhead in Europe, located in the 10th arrondissement of Paris. Reports say, there are about 190 million travelers per year. The station has also been featured in various Hollywood and French movies. The architecture makes the station appear more romantic, thus an ideal venue to shoot romantic scene of a movie.

Dunedin Station, Dunedin, New Zealand

Once the busiest train station of New Zealand, Dunedin Station is commonly known as “Gingerbread George.” With the advent of airplanes, the station is not frequently used by commuters, but that is no reason to make this beautiful station lag behind. The station features the Flemish style of architecture and is also adorned with mosaic-tiled floors.

Haydarpaşa Terminal, Istanbul, Turkey

There are various plans underway such as major shopping, public parks, cultural & tourist hub with five-star hotels, shopping plazas, a convention center, and art museums. So before it gets transformed into any of these, I will make sure to visit Haydarpaşa Terminal prior to others mentioned in the list. Though there has been renovation made after the damages caused by fire in 2010, the station showcases an amazing beauty, which is beyond comparison.

Kuala Lumpur Railway Station, Malaysia

In early 1900s, for the designing of the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station, the architect A. B. Hubback adopted the Moorish style of architecture. As the intercity trains started using the newer KL Sentral station in 2001, it is referred to as “old” station. The magnificent white building is worth a visit.

Groningen Station, Groningen, Netherlands

The Groningen Station is commonly called as Hoofdstation. This railway station is one of the major railheads in Groningen and was inaugurated on 1st June 1866. The architecture of the station keeps the onlooker spellbound with its highlights. The station features nine platforms and there also is a stabling point, behind the station, for various trains.

Did you know that World Travel Awards 2013 presented in Doha on 30th of November was their 20th Anniversary? Maharajas' Express was voted World's Leading Luxury Train at the award ceremony help in Qatar.

And it has delighted none other then one of our railways body. Authorities at Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) must be on cloud #9. They are the proud operators of Maharajas’ Express which is marketed as the most luxurious train in India.

Maharajas' Express was voted World's Leading Luxury Train at the World Travel Awards 2013

At a gala ceremony held in Doha at the La Cigale Hotel, Maharajas’ Express was declared Leading Luxury Train in the World for 2nd consecutive year. Previously, Maharajas’ Express had also been declared World’s Leading Luxury Train at the World Travel Award in 2012 and has achieved it once again in 2013.

Flagged off in 2010, Maharajas’ Express was touted as the India’s answer to the Orient Express of the West. The success story of Maharajas’ Express is a vindication of that sentiment expressed by officials and operators of the train.

Maharajas’ Express was recently run into troubled water after the Joint Venture between IRCTC and the Cox and Kings, a leading travel agency (known as Royale India Rail Tour Limited or RIRTL) abruptly ended. After a prolonged legal battle Maharajas’ Express was declared by the Hon’ble High Court of Delhi to be the sole property of IRCTC.

If there were any doubts regarding the efficiency and skills of this government body’s handling of Maharajas’ Express, they have been laid to rest with this award which is also considered to be the Oscar of Travel Award.

This year again, Maharajas’ Express outshined the likes of the Blue Train, Rocky Mountaineer and 3 luxury trains - Hiram Bingham, Venice-Simplon and Eastern and Oriental Express - from the legendary Orient Express Group.
