Erected during the second half of the 16th  century, Fatehpur Sikri was the erstwhile capital of Mughal Emperor Akbar for around 10 years between 1571 and 1585.

Founded  in 1569, Akbar built this complex in the honour of Sufi Saint Salim Chishti. This impressive architecture is an excellent proof of the evolution of town planning in India like Old Delhi, then known as Shahjahanabad.

There are several structures within its walls including harem, a mosque, palaces, private quarters and other necessary buildings. Diwan-i-Am, Diwan-i-Kas , Ranch Mahal, Buland Damaza, Jama Masjid, Daulat Khana are some of the prime structures. Earlier it was named as Fatehabad or the ‘City of Victory’.

Agra Fort: Legend of the Fall

Another UNESCO World Heritage site, Agra Fort is placed around 2.5 km north westwards of the Taj Mahal. Known as a walled city, was originally a brick fort that was owned by Sikarwar Rajputs.  It was captured by Sikandar Lodi, the Sultan of Delhi in 1080 who later shifted his capital to Agra and made this fort his home.

Later, his son Ibrahim Lodi built a mosque, a number of palaces and wells within the fort. After several years, Shah Jahan, the grandson of Akbar, also resided in the fort and it was during his reign that this structure flourished and added white-marble structures with semi-precious gems and gold inlays after destroying the earlier ones.

Inspired by Persian architecture, the Humayun’s Tomb is the burial place of Mughal emperor Nasir ud-din Muhammad Humayun. Constructed by his widow Hamida Banu Begum or Haji Begam after 14 years of his death in 1569,  the tomb is a synthesis of Persian and Indian architectural style.

It is believed that Humayun himself had planned the architecture of his tomb, though there is no proof of it. The main architect of the tomb was Mirak Mirza Ghiyath. Placed in the centre of a square-shaped garden, this red sandstone double-storey square tomb has the grave in an octagonal central chamber. This site is accessible through a passage towards the south.

Romance of the Rail: Palace on Wheels Luxury Train Travel

26th January is a historic day. For India, it marks the date when constitution of India came into force; for Rajasthan it was the date Palace on Wheels chugged off on its maiden voyage.

Although the concept of luxury train traveling is quite old in the West, for the first time in the history of India, a state tourism board decided to woo tourists and promote tourism overseas through the concept of luxury train.

Among the international tourist, who prefers an authentic experience while traveling abroad, Palace on Wheels is just the tailor-made option to explore the rich heritage and culture of Rajasthan, a state comprised of erstwhile princedoms ruled by Rajput warrior princes.

Palace on Wheels
Palace on Wheels is India's most revered luxury train
These maharajas of the land - something akin to the landed gentry in the West - were known for their indulgence. Being filthy rich, they built mighty forts, lavish palaces and indulged in idiosyncrasies that are now stuffs of legends and folklore.

Yet to their credit, they preserved and propagated art and cultural exchange. That to refer to them as the patrons of art would not be an overstatement. Various artists from all walks of life flocked to the patronage of these Rajput warrior princes, art and craft flourished; so much so that this otherwise barren state is one of the most vibrant and colorful destinations in India.

No wonder we have included Rajasthan as one of the top places in India to visit in winter.

Today visitors from all around the globe have Rajasthan as their first preference when they plan for an Indian holiday. For some it’s the riot of colors in turbans and the saris that the native wear set against the desert landscape and for some it’s the allure of lavish forts and palaces. Recently 6 hill forts of Rajasthan were inscribed by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites.

One of major draws of Rajasthan is the tastefully restored heritage hotels like Taj Lake Palace. These living legends which earlier belonged to various maharajas and their kin have now been converted into heritage hotels. For connoisseurs and corporate jet setters, heritage hotels in Rajasthan present an irresistible allure when it comes to choice of accommodation.

Once the palatial rooms of these heritage hotels served the purpose of courts and durbars, inner palaces were private chambers and courtyards for entertainment of hosts as well as royal guests.
Set amidst this background, stay in these heritage properties is a walk down the history lane - you might even wonder whether time travel is possible - to discover the pomp and legends of former princes, an authentic cultural and heritage experience in unmatched finesse. Gajner Palace in Bikaner and Devigarh Resort are two fine example of palace hotels in Rajasthan.

Recently, Rajasthan has become a hot destination for celebrity weddings; so much so that there’s a new saying doing the round: “marriages may be made in heaven but they are billed in Rajasthan.”
Then there is the variety of wildlife that could be observed in Ranthambore National Park, the former traditional hunting ground of Maharajas of Jaipur and Keoladeo National Park (which we had earlier listed as one of the top 10 awesome attractions of India), where the Maharaja of Bharatpur arranged duck shoots to honor and entertain British Viceroys of India.

If interested in call of the jungle, you may also want to check out wildlife vacation ideas in India.

Yet another activity that draws tourists is the shopping in Rajasthan. Paintings, jewelry, textiles, handicrafts and ethnic dressings, these and more are a rage among travelers from both India and overseas.

To not mention the cultural fairs of Rajasthan would be a gross injustice to the allure of this desert state. Cultural festivals and events in Rajasthan are recognized around the world. Thousands travel to attend Pushkar Fair, one of the most popular festivals in Rajasthan. Besides, Jaisalmer Desert Festival is yet another crowd puller along with the Camel Festival of Bikaner.

Not that these cultural events form the microcosm of Rajputana, but several fun activities, shopping and camel safaris in the sand dunes offer a multitude of cultural interactions that translates into unique and everlasting guest experiences. This and many more aspects of Rajasthan makes it one of the top 10 places to visit in India.

It is said that traveling in Rajasthan could keep even the fussiest of travelers on their toes. The sensory attack, the profusion of colors, the clattering of carts and frolic of folk performances and the hubris of fiddling through the rich heritage is a grandiloquent task; it might as well leave you confounded.

That is where Palace on Wheels steps in to your rescue. Composed originally of the private rail carriages used by Maharajas, Nizams and Viceroys of India, Palace on Wheels embarks every Wednesday from Delhi on a royal voyage spanning over the duration of 7 nights and 8 days.

How does it account for the authentic stay in heritage hotel?

The guest carriages of Palace on Wheels are designed to incorporate the elements of décor, history and culture of various princedoms of erstwhile Rajputana. Each carriage is named after a princely state.

Sylvan furnishings, door to door carpeting, modern amenities in each cabin along with attached personal washroom, dining cars, bar and lounges are some of the distinctive features of the Palace on Wheels.

Every moment spent on board the train is like spending time in a bygone era of elegant train traveling. A Khidmatgar (royal butler) is always at your service on board to take care of your every need. Dinners and lunch are on the house but guests need to pay for the spirits and liquor except for the house brands of wine and drinks.

The Bar Car, Palace on Wheels
The Bar Car of Palace on Wheels serves the choicest brands of wines and spirits from around the world as well as house brands of spirits
Off the train, all charges for transportation, entry fees, guides etc. are covered in the tariff itself. This is an important aspect of luxury train travel in India. Not just the movement during night and arrival at a new destination saves much precious time, the all inclusive itinerary ensures the absence of touts and fleeces which are the most irking part of normal travel in India.

An array of forts and palaces are covered. Guests are also exposed to shopping experience which is an essential part of tour to Rajasthan. A total of 7 destinations/attractions inscribed by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites are covered during the week long itinerary of Palace on Wheels.

Are these reasons enough to make it one of the top 10 luxury trains in the world?

Palace on Wheels travels across more than 9 former princedoms of Rajputana and various themes like heritage, history, wildlife are covered in a way impossible through any other mode of travel. Special cultural performances are arranged at select destinations. All along the journeys and destinations, the royal treatment reminiscent of the ways of former kings of Rajputana is invariably invoked.

And here are 5 things about Palace on Wheels if you are interested. And check out this video of Palace on Wheels journey for a peek into the royal rail journey through Rajasthan.

You may plan your Palace on Wheels journey through the website of Indian Holiday Pvt. Ltd. (www.indianluxurytrains.com/journeys/palace-on-wheels), a Delhi based Destination Management Company with 2 National Tourism Awards and 23 years of service to vouch for its credibility.

Ever wondered about some of the world's most spectacular train stations?

Belonging to a country with the biggest rail network, train travel has always fascinated me. There is something very different and alluring about train travel that you cannot compare to any other mode of transportation say flight or ship.

Amongst the best rail journeys in the world that I have taken till take, my favorite was from New Delhi to Nasik. It was a lifetime experience, though it took almost 23 hours to reach. On the way to Nasik, I was amazed to see some very beautiful railway stations with amazing interiors and architecture.

People always create lists like the places to visit in the world before you die and stuffs like that. In this blog itself, we have previously talked about most romantic islands in the world. We have also talked about 10 most awesome landmarks in the world and trains and most haunted places in the world etc.

This time, I thought I should talk about something different. And I reckon talking about world's most spectacular train stations would be a good idea as well as diversion. I wonder wouldn't one of this magnificent train stations deserve to be one of the top 10 places to visit in the world before you die.

My love for train travel has inspired me to make a list of world’s most beautiful railway stations that I wish to see.

Here is a rundown of some of my favorites train stations in the world:

    Grand Central Terminal, New York

Grand Central Terminal in New York
A view of main concourse of the Grand Central Terminal in New York
Grand Central Terminal is one of the world’s famous railway stations. This station is not just grand, but the world’s 6th most visited tourist destination according to the Travel + Leisure magazine. Design-oriented company Apple has also proposed to establish one of its flagship retail stores inside the Terminal.

    Belgium Antwerp Central Station

    Antwerp Central railway stations,Belgium

Antwerpen-Centraal (Flemish) is the Antwerp Central Station in Belgium. The fine architecture featuring large glass and iron vaulted dome that soars above the main waiting area.

Louis Delacenserie was the architect of the building, who designed the station by taking inspiration from different architectural styles. Till date, the building is not categorized under one specific architectural style.

During the time of its construction, the building was highly criticized for its lavishness, due to marble decoration.

    Gare De Liège-Guillemins, Liège, Belgium

    Gare De Liège-Guillemins, Liège, Belgium

Gare De Liège-Guillemins is the major station in the 3rd largest city in Belgium - Liege. The railway station is also one of the 3 Belgian stations on the high-speed rail network.

The architectural brilliance makes this railway stations rank highest amidst the beautiful stations in Europe.

    CFM Railway Station, Maputo, Mozambique

CFM Railway Station is simply amazing and defines beauty in the perfect way. The mint-green exteriors, wrought-iron latticework and a large dome add as major attributes of the unspoilt beauty of the railway station.

This railway station was designed in the early 20th century by Gustave Eiffel. Various historic steam locomotives are also showcased here.

    Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building, Japan

    Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building, Japan

Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building is one of the busiest terminal stations in Japan. This station also serves as the travel gateway of Shinkansen bullet trains, which are bound for different regions of Japan. This structure is also a cultural property having a long history and stories associated with it.

After renovation, the station showcases the classic outlook of 100 years ago. The station reopened in October, 2012.

    Helsinki Central Station, Finland

    Helsinki Central Station, Finland

Helsinki Central Station is a major spot of public transportation in Finland. About 200,000 passengers per day are recorded to be at Helsinki's Central station. The entrance of the railway station is beautified with statues holding the lamps and a distinct clock tower. The construction material and architectural brilliance makes the station one of a kind.

    King's Cross Station, London, England

    King's Cross Station, London, England

King's Cross Station is on my list as it is a major railway & underground station in London. The station is also located in proximity with Kings Cross, Somers Town, Bloomsbury and Regent's Park. The British Library is also one of the major attractions located near to the station.

Kings Cross Station is also located adjacent to King's Cross St Pancras Underground Station, which is on the Metropolitan Line, the Victoria Line, the Circle line, and the Hammersmith & City Line.

    São Bento Station, Porto, Portugal

    São Bento Station, Porto, Portugal

São Bento Station is one of my favorites due to its extraordinary beauty. The railway station is designed according to the 19th-century Parisian architecture with its stone façade and mansard roof. The awestruck front hall of the station is a major section that showcases unspoilt beauty.

The walls of the station are also covered with about 20,000 splendid azulejo tin-glazed ceramic tiles. The artist, Jorge Colaço, took 11 years to complete it.

    Gare Du Nord, Paris, France

    Gare Du Nord, Paris, France

Gare Du Nord is acclaimed to be the busiest railhead in Europe, located in the 10th arrondissement of Paris. Reports say, there are about 190 million travelers per year.

The station has also been featured in various Hollywood and French movies. The architecture makes the station appear more romantic, thus an ideal venue to shoot romantic scene of a movie.

    Dunedin Station, Dunedin, New Zealand

    Dunedin Station, Dunedin, New Zealand

Once the busiest train station of New Zealand, Dunedin Station is commonly known as “Gingerbread George.” With the advent of airplanes, the station is not frequently used by commuters, but that is no reason to make this beautiful station lag behind.

The station features the Flemish style of architecture and is also adorned with mosaic-tiled floors.

    Haydarpaşa Terminal, Istanbul, Turkey

    Haydarpaşa Terminal, Istanbul, Turkey

There are various plans underway such as major shopping, public parks, cultural & tourist hub with five-star hotels, shopping plazas, a convention center, and art museums. So before it gets transformed into any of these, I will make sure to visit Haydarpaşa Terminal prior to others mentioned in the list.

Though there has been renovation made after the damages caused by fire in 2010, the station showcases an amazing beauty, which is beyond comparison.

    Kuala Lumpur Railway Station, Malaysia

    Kuala Lumpur Railway Station, Malaysia

In early 1900s, for the designing of the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station, the architect A. B. Hubback adopted the Moorish style of architecture. As the intercity trains started using the newer KL Sentral station in 2001, it is referred to as “old” station. The magnificent white building is worth a visit.

    Groningen Station, Groningen, Netherlands

    Groningen Station, Groningen, Netherlands
The Groningen Station is commonly called as Hoofdstation. This railway station is one of the major railheads in Groningen and was inaugurated on 1st June 1866. The architecture of the station keeps the onlooker spellbound with its highlights. The station features nine platforms and there also is a stabling point, behind the station, for various trains.

    Mandu, Madhya Pradesh

    Jahaz Mahal, Mandu, Madhya Pradesh
Jahaz Mahal in Mandu is an exquisite specimen of Afghani architecture in India
The picturesque beauty of Mandu in monsoon was summed up best in reflection of none other than Mughal Emperor Jehangir in these words: "Of all places in Hindustan none is more beautiful than Mandu after the rains." This historical city is also renowned for the legendary romantic stories of Baz Bahadur and Rani Roopmati with the scale of narrative rivaling the plots great Shakespearian tragedies like Romeo and Juliet.

It is said that captivated by the ravishing beauty of Rani Roopmati, Adham Khan, a Mughal general invaded Mandu and in the ensuing battle Baz Bahadur lost his life. Learning of this and the intention of Adham Khan, Rani Roopmati preferred the death by poison to reunite with her lover in the other world thus ending the one of the greatest saga of romance in India.

Things to do in Mandu include visits to an array of monuments, tombs, mosques and palaces sprinkled across this scenic plateau perched along ravines, lakes and sweeping fields.
